Your Closet Is Full, The Market Is Hot
Your closet is full but the market is hot. Confessions of the Girl in the Yellow Coat on house hunting, what actually fits, and why “almost” isn’t good enough.
Confessions of the Girl in the Yellow Coat
I’m the Girl in the Yellow Coat.
I love a good find. Zero negotiation with yourself required. And yes, while a yellow coat can be impractical and hard to keep clean, it brings me joy the second I put it on. Bright, a little bold, and the exact opposite of blending in.
I've always believed that the things we choose to surround ourselves with should make us happy. Our clothes, our spaces, and especially our homes. If you’ve ever stood in your closet at 6:42 a.m. muttering “I have nothing to wear” while surrounded by clothes, congratulations: you already understand real estate. The market is just a very expensive closet with better lighting and worse parking.
Agents are the personal shoppers. The good ones don’t just show you what’s available; they ask what you actually need to live in, not just what looks good in the mirror. They’ll talk you out of the house that photographs like a dream but has a commute that ruins your entire week. That’s the friend who says, “That dress is stunning, but you will hate yourself by 9 p.m.”
And who are the agent’s best friends? Well, there's an entire team behind the scenes.
The Stagers are the stylists. They decide how to showcase the house on the runway. The Contractors do the alterations, and the Lenders are the people who check whether you can actually afford the coat before you fall in love with it. Then there are the Home Inspectors, those brutally honest friends who makes you try the outfit on in real light before you buy it. The Appraisers check whether the price tag actually matches what you're getting, and the Lawyers make sure everything comes together seamlessly (no pun intended).
Basically, it takes a village to put together a really good outfit. Or buy a house.
The Point (Promise, There Is One)
Real estate can feel overwhelming because the stakes are high - it’s the biggest, most expensive version of shopping most of us will ever do. But beneath the contracts, contingencies, and intimidating price tags, it's also about something surprisingly familiar: finding what fits.
Some seasons you need a practical investment piece. Some seasons you want the statement coat. Both are fine. The trick is knowing which one you’re actually looking for before you fall for the one that just looks good under the store lights.
Welcome to your closet, aka the Market!

P.S. If your current house is starting to feel like that outfit you loved three years ago but now only wear when you’re out of everything else, we should talk. Or at least compare notes over coffee. I’ll be the one in the Yellow Coat.
